Buildbase at Chelsea Flower Show
Buildbase at Chelsea Flower Show

Buildbase aims to supply “Everything to construct your dream garden except the plants!” and has clearly demonstrated this by sponsoring some of the most successful showgardens at Chelsea Flower Show in recent years, the world’s greatest horticultural event.

In 2004
Buildbase supported the
Salvation Army with their show garden, “From darkness to light”,
which won a Silver Medal
and the BBC People’s Choice Award.

In 2005
Buildbase supported the Chelsea Pensioners with their show garden,
“A Soldier’s dream of Blighty”,
the most successful garden
ever at Chelsea,
which won a Gold medal,
the Best Show Garden Award,
and the BBC People’s Choice Award.

In 2007
Buildbase joined forces with
popular TV gardener Chris Beardshaw
and provided all the materials to
construct his show garden
“Celebrating 100 years
of Hidcote Manor”
.

The world famous Hidcote Manor garden in the Cotswolds is now in the guardianship of The National Trust. It was laid out by its original owner, Laurence Johnson, in the early years of the 20th Century and has inspired gardeners ever since. The design, a series of “garden rooms”, has been highly influential, and Chris went back to Johnson’s original planting plans for his Chelsea garden.

Buildbase supplied subtly pre-aged natural stone paving from Bradstone for the main paved areas in the garden, and clay brick pavers from Blockleys for other areas. Cotswold drystone walling from Stonemarket was provided for the retaining wall. The elegant brick pavilion, with its gentle convex Cotswold stone roof, was an iconic image of Hidcote and Buildbase sourced materials from our best suppliers to match the original perfectly. The facing bricks come from Charnwood Brick and the stone roof tiles and dressings were from Bradstone. Buildbase even supplied Inturf’s drought resistant RTF Turf for the lawn, and blended topsoil for the plant areas. Just as in any garden project many materials were hidden from view, hardcore, sand, cement, lime, timber, and much more. These all come from Buildbase. Hirebase, Buildbase’s hire division, supplied all of the equipment used in the garden build, including a mini – digger, dumper and telehandler.

Public choose their no.1

The great British gardening public have chosen their favourite garden at the Chelsea Flower Show 2007. Chris Beardshaw’s garden, in association with Buildbase, has won the BBC People’s Choice award, with a landslide vote! The show garden, which celebrates the centenary of Hidcote Manor, received ten times as many votes as the three other finalists.

“So many visitors to the show said they loved the design because it gave them ideas that they could use in their own gardens” says Nigel Bullock, landscape manager at Buildbase. “What’s more it’s an accessible design because the materials – including the turf and all the hard landscaping – are available at Buildbase branches across the country. This, together with Chris’s wonderful, artistic planting, made a winning combination.”

Chris Beardshaw garden awarded Silver-Gilt medal

The Chris Beardshaw garden, in association with Buildbase, has been awarded a Silver-Gilt medal at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The garden celebrates the centenary of Hidcote Manor, a beautiful English garden set in the heart of the Cotswolds. Having visited it as a boy, Hidcote was the garden that gave Chris the inspiration to become a designer. Buildbase has supplied everything to build the garden, except the plants. All the materials are available from Buildbase branches so anyone can recreate a little bit of this medal-winning Chelsea garden for themselves.

The new Buildbase Garden Landscaping brochure is out now and available from your local branch, or call 0800 107 2255
(email: information@buildbase.co.uk), to request a copy.

Chris Beardshaw has himself enjoyed great success at Chelsea, last year achieving a Gold medal and the BBC People’s Choice Award. He said,

“I am delighted to be working with Buildbase, who have performed brilliantly to supply everything for this garden except the plants. All of the materials used are available for members of the public to buy at their local branch of Buildbase so that they can recreate a little bit of Chelsea in their own garden!”

Triple garden success for Buildbase and Beardshaw
Buildbase is celebrating triple success following a collaboration with Chris Beardshaw to exhibit at three of the UK’s top horticultural events in 2007.  The builders merchant has supplied all the construction materials for show gardens designed by Chris at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and, most recently, the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

At Hampton Court the gold medal winning ‘DfES Growing Schools Garden’ also took the top accolade known as the Tudor Rose which is awarded to the best in show.  Chris has worked with 30 schools to produce the garden.  It demonstrates how teaching and learning can take place outside the classroom and how this benefits many other areas of the curriculum.

The project has been masterminded by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) as part of its Out of Classroom learning manifesto, and involves Learning through Landscapes (LTL), the national school grounds charity, and Farming and Countryside Education (FACE).
The garden will be moved to Birmingham Botanical Gardens to be used as a long-term resource to train and advise teachers on exciting, new ideas and a realistic vision of what can be achieved in and beyond the school grounds.
At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Chris’s memorable garden celebrating the centenary of Hidcote Manor garden, won the public vote and was named BBC People’s Choice.  The ‘Chris Beardshaw in association with Buildbase showgarden’ recreated classic features from the National Trust’s best-loved Cotswold gardens and was awarded a silver-gilt medal.

Buildbase also supplied all the materials to construct Chris’s garden at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show.  His entry was a showcase for the rural skills and craftsmanship of the area dating back 150 years to early Victorian England. Pupils from Adcote School in Shrewsbury helped Chris to grow some of the produce for the garden which won a gold medal and was named ‘best in show’.

“We have been very honoured to join forces with one of the UK’s most exciting garden designers and support him at these three principal events in the horticultural calendar,”  says Nigel Bullock, Buildbase landscape manager.  “Chris has been the most successful designer, winning two gold medals, two best in shows and the BBC’s People’s Choice award.  His ideas to get youngsters interested in gardening are taking off in a big way and we are pleased to lend our support.”

Chris Beardshaw said: “I’m delighted have worked with Buildbase who have been able to provide almost everything for the garden except the plants.  It’s not easy to create beautiful gardens but the whole process is certainly made easier by being able to go to an established supplier like Buildbase. Gardeners can buy all the materials at their local branch so they can recreate a little bit of our show gardens at home.”
