Scotland's Largest Independent Joins Buildbase
A significant acquisition was finalised in July last year when Scotland's largest independent timber and builders merchant joined Buildbase. John Fleming & Co Ltd has been trading in mainland Scotland and the Scottish isles of Shetland and Orkney since 1876.
John Fleming has branches in Aberdeen; Inverness; Banchory; Kirkwall (Orkney Islands); Grangemouth; Lerwick (Shetland Islands, trading as Hay & Co) and Dundee (trading as Bell & Sime). Orkney and Shetland which were integrated in January 2007 with the remainder to follow in March. Ken McLelland is regional director for the Flemings branches and is based at Grangemouth.
Flemings is a company steeped in history but with a modern outlook. Its core range is timber and timber-based products but has expanded its range to many other building materials, with special product lines at some branches to suit local demand. As part of Buildbase there are plans to extend the range of products still further which will mean significant investment in the sites in due course and work has begun on this already.
ABERDEEN
Aberdeen branch is located in Bridge of Don and predominantly trades in timber, sheet materials and joinery. Customers include larger housebuilders, kit manufacturers and small to medium-sized builders. There is a separate kitchen, bedroom and bathroom showroom for trade and retail customers, and a mill service. John Anderson is manager.
BANCHORY
Banchory in Kincardineshire offers a local service. As well as timber and more general products there is a strong kitchen and bathroom business, a trade stores including a Dulux trade centre, and a hard landscaping centre outside. Graeme McAnally is manager.
DUNDEE
Dundee trades as Bell & Sime and is situated on the Baluniefield Industrial Estate. This large, well-established branch mostly sells timber, sheet materials and joinery to the trade. There is also a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom showroom. Joe Leslie is assistant manager.
GRANGEMOUTH
Grangemouth provides timber and sheet materials to larger housebuilders and civil engineering contractors in the central belt of Scotland. The branch in Wood Street has a large, modern mill which handles machining, stress grading, preservation and manufactures mouldings and I-beams. John Milne is manager.
INVERNESS
Inverness branch is in a prime location on Shore Street and attracts plenty of collected business. Inverness serves builders and secondary merchants throughout the Highlands and delivers regularly to the islands. The product mix is mainly timber, sheet materials and joinery with a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom showroom, trade centre and landscaping area. John Macrae is manager.
KIRKWALL, ORKNEY
Orkney is located on the Hatson Industrial Estate in Kirkwall and is the main supplier of timber, sheet and joinery products in Orkney. Opened 13 years ago the depot was originally best known as a timber and sheet materials supplier but has since expanded its product range to become a general builders merchant selling everything from underground drainage, roof tiles and uPVC windows and doors to kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and decorating products. LERWICK, SHETLAND
Shetland branch, originally Hay & Co, has been trading for over 150 years. In January it was fully integrated into the Buildbase system. Serving local builders and DIY enthusiasts, this well-known Shetland business is situated on Freefield Road in Lerwick. It is the original builders merchant on the island with all the materials needed by the tradesman from timber and joinery to plumbing and heating, and everything in between. There is also a large kitchen, bathroom and bedroom showroom, a decorating centre and hard landscaping area. Hay & Co is also the place to come for coal supplies. Steven Laidlaw is manager.
