When we say that Buildbase is an award-winning builders merchant, this is no exaggeration.

In the ten years since Buildbase opened its first branch, it has been named the UK’s ‘Best National Builders Merchant’ on two occasions. It was 2003 when Buildbase first won this prestigious industry accolade in the Builders Merchants Awards for Excellence. In competition with other well-known multi-nationals, Buildbase came out top for the second time in last year’s awards.

The independent panel of judges from the industry felt Buildbase deserved to win the award for a number of reasons. In just ten years Buildbase has gone from being a single depot to an 130-branch network with a turnover approaching £500m and a workforce of around 2000. Staff turnover remains low and, wherever possible, employees are given responsibility and accountability.

The company sees itself as a ‘national independent’ builders merchant, combining the best of both worlds.  It has the financial strength, stability and buying power of a large organisation while local branch managers are encouraged to exercise entrepreneurial flair to stimulate business.

As well as the industry’s top award, Buildbase has excelled in other areas.  The company won the ‘Best Customer Service’ in the BM Awards for Excellence 2004.  It has been shortlisted in many other categories including ‘Best Marketing Initiative’, ‘Best Website’, ‘Best Manager’ and ‘Best Training Initiative’.  Buildbase chief executive, Kevin Middleton, and Buildbase director, John Bailey and Bill Chaplin of Midlands region, have been finalists in the ‘Personality of the Year’ award which recognises those who have made a significant contribution to the industry.
