Cement & Limes
Cement is used both as a binder for masonry projects as well as to build walls, point brickwork, make joints for pipes and drains. Cement can be used to protect exposed surfaces from the elements and helps keep out water. It is used in concrete for laying floors, making beams, lintels, stairs, and pillars. Cement consists of highly reactive silica-containing compounds and when mixed with water, they harden quickly.
Lime is a cement which is a binder or glue which holds things together but cement is usually reserved for Portland cement, Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general use. Lime mortar is produced from natural limestone by burning the stone in a kiln. Non hydraulic lime hardens by a slow process of carbonation, reacting with atmospheric carbon dioxide over weeks. Hydraulic limes and types of cement set rapidly by reacting with water in a matter of hours. A non hydraulic lime can be made to set much more rapidly by the addition of a hydraulic or 'pozzolanic' additive, this practice is known as 'gauging'. Hydrated lime and quicklime are commonly referred to as 'air lime' products, hydrated lime is the type of lime most widely used as a component in mortars and renders. Lime is a major constituent in exterior and interior stuccos and plasters, enhancing the strength, durability, and workability of these finishes. Generally, masonry lime is used for masonry mortars, stuccos, and plaster.
