Primer paint is used to seal an unpainted surface before you apply your paint to avoid the paint soaking in. Oil or water-based primer paint provide optimal paint-surface adhesion, increased paint durability and extra protection for the materials being painted. Primer paint will need to be used if the surface has not been previously painted. If you do not use a primer paint then paint may soak into the surface, meaning you’ll need more coats of your chosen paint and you may not have such a professional finish. If the surface has been previously painted the usually only undercoat paint would be required.
