Garden & Railway Sleepers
Garden sleepers, also known as railway sleepers or railroad sleepers, are traditionally used to lay rail tracks on. Garden or railway sleepers are large, rectangular, sawn pieces of timber that are used in a variety of landscaping and gardening projects and environments, such as raised beds, lawn and border edging, steps, pathways, and retaining walls. Over recent years, railway sleepers have seen a revival of interest due to their versatility and strength, garden and railway sleepers are commonly used to build planters and act as a great edging as well as a great structural timber that is ideal for retaining walls.
Reclaimed railway sleepers can last a few decades without being treated however, to help nourish and protect the timber from decay, we recommend applying a wood preservative. To preserve the railway sleepers further, we advise treating the garden sleepers with an exterior wood oil or decking oil, ideally twice a year, Spring and Autumn are most preferable for best application. This will help to repel water and prevent water ingress which is the main cause of wood rot and damage.
