Topsoil

Topsoil is the upper, outermost layer of soil, usually the top 2 to 10 inches in depth where everything grows measured from the surface to the first densely packed layer of subsoil. Topsoil has the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms and is where most of the Earth's biological soil activity occurs. Topsoil is composed of mineral particles, organic matter, water, and air.

The topsoil layer may also contain micro-organisms, worms, insects, spiders, bacteria, and fungi, these organisms along with animal faeces and rotting plant matter contribute to the making of high-quality topsoil. Some topsoil may be more alkaline or acidic depending on the area and this can be corrected or adjusted to suit certain plants to improve their growth. Topsoil may be less ideal if you are planting in pots where compost is a stronger choice for plant growth.

If the soil in your landscaping project is very shallow, or you are making new garden beds, adding or replacing a lawn, or putting in raised beds and need to add new soil, topsoil is what you need. Top soil comes in three main being clay which is rich in nutrients but doesn't drain well and can be difficult, Sandy which drains well and does not hold water, and Silty which is made from quartz and smooth in texture.
