AN INTRODUCTION TO TIMBER

At Huws Gray we have access to a wide range of timber suitable for all projects, so if you need something special speak to your local branch and we will work with our suppliers to source what you need. For cut and machined timber, we’ve got over 25 branches with mill services available to you.

Timber can be a complicated product, different sizes lengths, and strengths, C16 or C24, homegrown and imported, OSB or Plywood, PSE or CLS...

We understand that each piece of timber has its own uses and that you might have your own preferences. However, what’s important to all our customers is that we have the products you need, when you need it, whether you need to stud-out a new build or replace a piece of skirting. So we took all the important sheets, lengths of carcassing, joinery, battens, CLS, and landscaping timbers, and created a range that we will always keep in stock in project quantities. We’ve added to our previous range to give you more choice and included more lengths which means less wastage on site. That way, you can be sure we’ve got the timber for whatever job you’re working on. You can also be assured as merchants we hold a responsibility to the environment and our timber range is sourced from sustainably certified forests. As far as possible, we use stock renewable materials to supply products that are of maximum use with minimum consumption of resources.

MDF SHEETS

Caberwood MDF Pro is a premium grade MDF with a uniform density across the board. Suitable for straightforward machine and surface finishing, it saws, drills, shapes and routs cleanly, without splintering or chipping. Caberwood’s smooth surface is ideal for most paint and surface finishes including the application of paper foils and veneers.

CaberFloor is the UK's most specified moisture resistant P5. Stable, durable, and easy to lay. It provides a quality surface for subsequent floor laying options. CaberDek P5 Removable Film combines particleboard flooring with a tough, waterproof and slip-resistant film. Remove the film after the work is completed to leave a clean, finished floor.

PLYWOOD

Hardwood ply is suitable for outside and inside use as it’s durable, strong and hard-wearing. It can be stained, treated, or painted and is less likely to warp due to laminated layers. Marine grade plywood is made with a waterproof binder, making it a great choice in areas where moisture, humidity, and water will be present like a bathroom or a kitchen. Structural ply is primarily used for shuttering, boarding and packaging, but is suitable for all general-purpose building projects

OSB

OSB is a general-purpose alternative to plywood, used in load bearing humid conditions. Square edge OSB is generally used for walling, partitioning and flooring, and the tongue and groove OSB is suitable for roofing and flooring. It also works an alternative to shuttering ply for site hoardings or boarding up.

CARCASSING

Carcassing timbers are those used in structural applications, such as roof joists or floor joists, framing, studwork and wall partitions. There are a range of strengths, sizes and lengths of timber available depending on your project. Carcassing timber is widely available from imported (C24) or homegrown (C16) sources and is offered treated with a preservative or untreated.

CLS - CANADIAN LUMBER STANDARD

CLS, Canadian Lumber Standard, timber is kiln-dried then planed and finished for more precise dimensions and is far less likely to twist or bend, making it great for internal joinery, and framing applications right up to timber frame houses. The smooth edges make it easier to handle on site and when pressure treated, CLS has a long life in internal structural applications.

PRECISION DIMENSIONS – MINIMAL SPLINTERING

ROOFING BATTENS

A key part of the roofing structure, battens provide the fixing point for roof tiles, slates and sheets. Our battens are fully graded and treated to increase longevity and provide resistance to rot and decay.
Green treated battens have a more neutral look and can be used in a wide variety of landscaping and garden projects where as natural aesthetic is favoured.
