What Size Lintel Do I Need?

Choose the right lintel

WHAT SIZE LINTEL DO I NEED?: STEP 1, STEP 2 and STEP 3

Choosing the correct lintel can seem like a daunting task, with hundreds of difference styles and sizes, it can make even a seasoned tradesman double take.

Here at Huws Gray and Lintels.co.uk we want to help streamline this process to save you time, money and the associated headache that comes with wasting both of the above. We have a 3 step guide which if followed will allow the correct lintel to be determined for the majority of cases.

STEP 1: KNOW YOUR WALL CONSTRUCTION

Below are the 6 Main Types of Lintels

CAVITY WALL

Cavity Wall box image

INTERNAL SOLID WALL

Internal solid box image

TIMBER FRAME

Timber Frame Box Image

INTERNAL PARTITION

SINGLE SKIN

Single Skin Box Image

EXTERNAL SOLID WALL

external solid wall box Image

In addition to this you will need to know the dimensions of the Wall. For example a Cavity wall you will need to know:

A: Outer Leaf.
B: Cavity.
C: Inner Leaf.

in this example.
A 100mm Cavity Wall Lintel would be required.

STEP 2: KNOW YOUR LENGTH

How wide is the structural opening?

  • Measure the size of the structural opening i.e. the clear span between the Masonry supports.
  • Add 150mm minimum bearing to each end.

See example below:

steptwo box image

With this example:
150mm + 1800mm + 150mm = 2100mm.
Bearing + Clear Span + Bearing = Overall Length.

STEP 3: KNOW YOUR LOAD

You need to know the load in which the Lintel will support.

This can be determined by:

  • Masonry
  • Roof Load: Truss / Attic.
  • Floor Load: Joists / Slabs.
  • Live Loads: Residential / Commercial / Industrial Use.

Finally, the Ratio between the Outer and Inner Leaf will need to be established.

By Following these 3 steps you will be well on your way to choosing the correct lintel for the job in hand.

If you are not sure about any of the above, contact your local expert team with our Branch locator, they will put you in touch with a lintel Technical team who can assist.

CONCRETE LINTELS

Prestressed concrete lintels play a pivotal role in any building’s structural integrity typically used for window and door openings. They can accept a wide range of surface finishes without special preparation and come in a variety sizes and loadings. This makes concrete lintels reliable and durable with a lower construction cost, fewer joints and a high strength to section ratio.

Prestressed concrete lintels are one of the most reliable, durable and widely used in the construction industry, boasting a number of benefits including lower construction cost, fewer joints and a high strength to section ratio.

Supreme prestressed concrete lintels have been awarded a BSI Kitemark, are manufactured with a texture finished and feature Supreme’s superior concrete technology to match the lintel to a multitude of frames.

Prestressed lintels have high-tension steel wires running through the middle. The lintels have excellent thermal properties and are less susceptible to moisture and chemical corrosion.

What size concrete lintel do I need?

The lintel should be installed with a minimum end bearing of 150mm, so measure your opening and add at least 300mm. Unlike steel lintels, a concrete lintel is often used in visible areas and painted if required.

CAVITY LINTELS

Cavity wall lintels are designed for use when two layers of bricks and blocks or ‘skins’ are used to construct a space or cavity between the structure. The in-built foam or polystyrene insulation helps to retain warmth through insulation and reduces condensation.

Our key suppliers are Birtley Steel Lintels and Keystone Lintels. All of our steel lintels are galvanized to protect against premature rust and corrosion and meet the Thermal Performance requirements of all UK Building Regulations.
The NHBC (National House Building Council) recommend a damp-proof course (DPC) or cavity tray should be installed over all openings in external cavity walls.
Huws Gray has a large range of standard cavity lintels available in a variety of widths from 70mm to 165mm, with lengths from 900mm to 3900mm.
For thicker steel and when a lintel with a longer span is required, Huws Gray has a range of medium and heavy duty lintels for 90-105mm cavity widths stocked in lengths from 1200mm to 4800mm.

SOLID WALL BOX LINTELS

Box lintels are used for solid wall construction, with the 100mm ranges used for single skin internal walls and the 200mm ranges used for double skins, typically external walls, with no cavity.

The lintel is designed to carry the full load of wet masonry as soon as it is installed but must have a minimum end bearing of 150mm each side of the opening and be bedded on mortar with all perpendicular joints filled with mortar.

The box lintel is galvanised to protect the steel from premature rust and corrosion and has perforations along its length acting as a plaster key and can be insulated if required.

Box lintels are available in two options to support 100mm wide walls with lengths from 1200mm to 3600mm, and 200-215mm wide walls with lengths from 1200mm to 4800mm.

SINGLE LEAF LINTELS

Constructed from galvanised steel, single leaf lintels are used to support single leaf walls or the external openings (the outer leaf) of a cavity wall, adding strength to the construction.

Single leaf lintels are suitable for faced brick or block walls and can be used for meter reading boxes through to heavier applications. Lintels over 1500mm must be propped until masonry is fully loaded and cured.

PADSTONES

Supreme padstones are high strength dense concrete blocks designed to support the weight of load-bearing lintels whose ends rest on the padstone. The concrete used in the manufacturing of the padstone conforms to a compressive strength class C40/50.

Concrete padstones are a vital part of construction as they designed not to be crushed like regular blockwork when subjected to the pressure of the steel or concrete lintel and the weight above.
