YOUR GUIDE TO INSULATION

ACOUSTIC INSULATION

Acoustic insulations deadens the transfer of noise between rooms by absorbing the sound. Using acoustic insulation in refurbishment projects will make a difference to sound transfer, especially in conjunction with sound-deadening plasterboard. Using mineral wool ensures a better fit between insulation and timberwork, reducing the potential for gaps caused by inaccurate cutting. Combined with the appropriate plasterboard, this will meet any sound-related Building Regulations.

Earthwool Acoustic Roll

We stock Earthwool Acoustic Roll; a non-combustible mineral wool manufactured with Ecose technology, offering a lower price point than acoustic slabs and several environmental benefits. The rolls are pre-cut into 2 x 600mm wide sections so they can easily be separated and laid between stud wall battens or floor joists which are typically placed at 600mm centres.

Rockwool Sound Slab

Rockwool Sound Slab is designed for use in internal and separating walls and floors to reduce noise from adjacent rooms or neighbouring properties.
This A1 fire-rated product is ideal for use in home offices, bedrooms and gaming rooms as the slabs are easy to fit around cables, pipes, sockets and services. Made from stone wool, the noncombustible slabs can withstand temperatures up to 1777°c, helping to reduce the risk of fire spread. The easy friction fitting leaves no gaps resulting in maximum performance which better absorbs sound waves and traps vibration.

Acoustic Insulation

Using acoustic insulation deadens the transfer of sound between rooms, providing sound insulation and sound absorption. This simply leads to a better quality of life for occupants and a feeling of high-quality construction if sound from one room is less audible in others.

Whilst noise reduction is often a system and can involve changes in the way structural timber is used, as well as the type of flooring and plasterboard chosen, selecting the right insulation is key. Using acoustic insulation in refurbishment projects will make a difference to sound transfer, especially in conjunction with sound-deadening plasterboard. Using mineral wool as acoustic insulation ensures a better fit between insulation and timberwork reducing the potential for gaps caused by inaccurate cutting. Combined with the appropriate plasterboard, this will meet any sound-related Building Regulations.

CAVITY INSULATION

External walls on residential and commercial properties, both new builds and extensions, require cavity insulation to meet Building Regulations.

Knauf DriTherm

Knauf DriTherm cavity slabs are a non-combustible glass mineral wool slab incorporating the environmentally friendly Ecose technology as well as a water repellent additive Cavity insulation, installed as the wall is built, prevents mortar and debris bridging the cavity by creating a moisture bridge.
As well as top-class thermal performance, DriTherm is sized to fit between wall ties without the need for retaining discs, reducing cost and saving time on site. Huws Gray stocks DriTherm 32 Ultimate and DriTherm 37 Standard.

  • DriTherm 32 Ultimate offers the best thermal efficiency, the slightly higher price brings long-term savings. All new build homes should be specified with DriTherm 32.
  • DriTherm 37 Standard is mainly used in extensions. It offers a lower thermal performance but retains the water repellent additive and A1 fire rating.

Xtratherm Cavity Wall Board

Huws Gray also supplies Xtratherm’s Thin-R Partial Fill Cavity Wall XT/CW boards, which thanks to tongue and grooved joints, ensure insulation continuity and minimisation of thermal bridging.
These boards are foil-faced polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation and so are quite robust for easy handling on site and can be simply slotted in during construction then fixed into place.
Designed for use in traditional masonry walls and maintains a residual cavity, offering protection from wind driven rain. A full-fill board is also available to order.

A Guide to Knauf Dritherm Insulation

New external walls on residential and commercial properties require cavity insulation, whether new build or extension, so that construction meets Building Regulations relating to heat loss.

Huws Gray supplies Knauf Dritherm cavity slabs; a non-combustible glass mineral wool slab. Dritherm incorporates the environmentally friendly Ecose technology as well as a water repellent additive, suitable to prevent slabs being damaged during construction and making them perfect for external wall construction. Full-fill insulation, installed as the wall is built, prevents mortar and debris bridging the cavity thereby creating a moisture bridge.

As well as top-class thermal performance, Dritherm is sized to fit between wall ties without the need for retaining discs, reducing cost and saving time on site.

Huws Gray stocks Dritherm 32 Ultimate and Dritherm 37 Standard. 32 Ultimate offers the best thermal efficiency, the slightly higher price brings long-term savings. All new build homes should be specified with Dritherm 32.

37 Standard is mainly used in extensions. It offers a lower thermal performance but retains the water repellent additive and A1 fire rating at a lower price point.

LOFT ROLL INSULATION

The required loft insulation in new builds using mineral wool alone is 270mm depth, but standards are expected to increase over time. Installing loft roll is a common and relatively easy task for the homeowner to save on heating bills. This often involves an additional layer of 100mm or 200mm laid at right angles to existing insulation. Care must be taken to ensure the roof space is ventilated and eaves are not completely blocked, typically achieved using a plastic guard called a baffle.

Earthwool Loft Roll

For insulating cold roof spaces (where the loft is not a habitable room) in pitched roofs at ceiling level, Earthwool Loft Roll is a non-combustible mineral wool manufactured with Ecose technology, one of the benefits of which is to make the rolls much easier to handle.

  • Earthwool offers excellent thermal performance, an A1 fire-rating and a choice of two lengths.
  • Earthwool Loft Roll 44 Ready-Cut is available in one size: pre-cut to 600mm widths in 150mm depth, the pack provides 9.18m². Earthwool Combi-Cut 44 is partially perforated for easy use at 400mm or 600mm centres to reduce time on the job.

PITCHED ROOF AND FLOOR INSULATION

If your building needs a warm roof space then insulating between rafters, against eaves walls and across the ceiling is critical to meeting the U-Value requirements for heat loss. Foil-faced PIR boards offer a good solution due to their ability to provide high thermal insulation with minimal thickness, leaving more habitable space. Their light-weight and rigidity means they are also easily fixed in place and any angles easy to cut.

Warm Roof construction is a particularly effective way of insulating complex roofs. Insulating above – or above and between – the roof timbers ensures that the structure is kept at or near the internal environmental conditions, reducing thermal stress and condensation risk.

Xtratherm XT/PR Boards

Huws Gray work with Xtratherm to supply Thin-R Pitched Roof XT/ PR boards. On sloped roofs (ventilated, hybrid or warm) these provide the most efficient U-values with minimal intrusion into valuable living space. Using XT/PR will reduce heat loss and thermal bridging.
